Cosmic Weather: May 2017 by Jane Lyle
Monday 1st May:
Today is May Day, and the ancient Celtic festival of Beltane.
The veil between the worlds is so thin, you can see right through it in places. Or so they say. It’s a season to show your deepest respect for the supernatural – it just might be more real than you think. And with Jupiter playing games with foggy Neptune all month long, the edges of solid reality are bound to blur and dissolve now and again.
“At Bealltainn, or May Day, every effort was made to scare away the fairies, who were particularly dreaded at this season. In the West Highlands charms were used to avert their influence. In the Isle of Man the gorse was set alight to keep them at a distance. In some parts of Ireland the house was sprinkled with holy water to ward off fairy influence. These are only a mere handful out of the large number of references available, but they seem to me to reveal an effort to avoid the attentions of discredited deities on occasions of festival once sacred to them. The gods duly return at the appointed season, but instead of being received with adoration, they are rebuffed by the descendants of their former worshippers, who have embraced a faith which regards them as demons.
In like manner the fairies in Ireland were chased away from the midsummer bonfires by casting fire at them. At the first approach of summer, the fairy folk of Scotland were wont to hold a "Rade," or ceremonial ride on horseback, when they were liable to tread down the growing grain.”

Monday 1st May – Friday, 12th May:
May brings us a fresh, fiery phase. Mercury in Aries turns direct on 3rd May, moving towards another alignment with electrifying Uranus, planet of rebels, inventors, and those who desire change. News of disruptive, or surprising events catches our attention.
This buzzy connection happened at the end of March, and the end of April. So here is more of the same – and as Mercury goes on to form a practical, supportive link with Saturn, we have a shining opportunity to bring exciting, cutting edge ideas into solid reality. Opportunity is the vital keyword, this vibrant energy simply goes pfft! if we don’t choose to use it. This could be third time lucky, lucky, lucky for some of us.
Areas of special focus include:
• Outer space discoveries and swashbuckling explorations
• Communications of all kinds from lively chats to high-energy promotions
• Research projects
• Engineering, travel and transport – it could be an amazing time for further developing electric vehicles, for example.
• Mass movements with shared ideals – covering everything from trade unions to irresistible groundswells of public opinion.
If you have planets at 24-27 degrees of Aries, Leo, or Sagittarius, or Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius, here’s an invitation to open up to what’s new and different. Watch out for ideas or encounters that pop up out of the blue too. With the helpful influence of Saturn’s structure, a crazy idea could manifest as exhilarating, lasting change.
Here’s the astrology :
1st – 13th May: Mercury is travelling in Aries between 24 –27 degrees.
Mercury turns direct on 3rd May at 24 degrees Aries.
Mercury conjunct Uranus, 25 degrees, exact 10th May.
Mercury trine Saturn Retrograde, at 26 degrees Sagittarius, exact 11th-12th May.
Saturn in Sagittarius trine Uranus in Aries is exact at 26 degrees on Friday, 19th May. However, Saturn trine Uranus is active all month and is one of May’s big themes. It will be exact again in November at 25 degrees.
Mercury enters Taurus on 16th May.
Tuesday, 9th May:
Brave Heart - the Moon’s True North Nodes enter Leo
The Moon’s nodes, travelling backwards through the signs, take about nineteen years to complete their circuit of the Zodiac. They represent portals, passageways, plus our friends and associates – and they are traditionally points where karma, destiny or fate plays a part in our lives. Why? Because the astrological signs where the nodes – also called the Dragon’s Head and Dragon’s Tail – are found is where the eclipses will take place. When the new Moon or full Moon aligns with either of the Moon’s nodes (North or South) there will be an eclipse.
Eclipses tend shake things up, or sensitise a planet in your natal horoscope so that your attention is drawn to it, and the issues and life lessons it represents. The gates open, and cosmic energy flows through at that particular point. Destiny comes knocking, and we go to meet it.
What’s coming up in 2017 - 2018 are a series of eclipses in the fixed signs of fiery Leo, the Lion, and airy Aquarius, the Water Bearer. The last time we experienced this Leo/Aquarius eclipse cycle was between August 1998 and July 2000. It’s worth thinking about what happened then, and whether any special area of life was important to you at that time. If so, there will be echoes, or there may be new developments that have their roots in that time. And if you were born with the Moon’s nodes in Leo or Aquarius then you’re at the start of a new cycle.
The Moon’s North node was in Leo:
10th June 1961 – 23rd December 1962
12th January 1980 – 24th September 1981
20th October 1998 – 9th April 2000
And the Moon’s North node was opposite, in Aquarius:
2nd November 1970 – 27th April 1972
22nd May 1989 – 18th November 1990
18th December 2007 – 21st August 2009
The Moon’s North node in Leo opens up vibrant themes of generosity, courage, love, and creativity. It’s asking us to pay attention to playfulness, self-expression, heart and soul. These are positive areas, glowing with potential. The houses involved in your natal chart offer clues as to which areas of life could benefit from some creativity and fun. Everyone is creative, you don’t have to be artistic to find ways to express yourself. If you struggle to believe this, think about a group of young children – creativity and play are an integral part of every human being.
Over at the South node, we find a description of what we know, or what we have already experienced. In this case, its about matters Aquarian – meaning, basically, the collective and society as a whole. Our collective self-expression is seen globally on the internet – warts and all. There’s intoxicating freedom out there, but also poisonous strands of hatred, danger, and judgmental bullying. The masses are not always kind, and virtual mob rule is a potential nightmare we need to face up to.
As the North nodes enter the kingdom of Leo, they align with the Heart of the Lion, fixed star Regulus at 29 Leo – 0 Virgo. This is a burst of powerful energy, symbolising ambition, power, royalty, and political and military leaders. It’s intensely potent, and warns in a big, loud voice, against hubris, and the desire for revenge. The price of taking revenge will be devastating, not sweet.
This Royal Star of Persia will have a pivotal part to play in the upcoming Leo eclipse in August. This total solar eclipse takes place at 28-29 degrees of Leo, aligned with Regulus. Although I think that this ‘Great American Eclipse’ has a global message, it will only be visible (as a total eclipse) in America, and is therefore profoundly important for the USA, it’s leadership, and it’s population.

Wednesday, 10th May:
Still Waters Run Deep - the full Moon rises at 20 degrees Scorpio, the Scorpion
A Scorpio full Moon is always emotional, always deep, and always intense. This one has added underworld power, courtesy of an alignment with the Dark Lord himself, Pluto.
Pluto is the modern ruler of Scorpio, and symbolises what lies beneath. Unconscious motives, buried resources, hidden secrets and shadowy operators are all energised by this full Moon’s astrology.

Saturday, 6th - Saturday, 13th May:
Here are some intriguing days of dreamy, mystical energy – glamour, inspiration, and fantasy are swirling around in a hall of smoke and mirrors. The energy and inspiration to make dreams come true is there, somewhere. But as active Mars meets Neptune and Jupiter, the potential for confusion, deception, and delusion is ever present too.
This can be a time of scandals – potentially huge scandals, or mysterious events that are hard to analyse and explain. For some of us, it’s a phase of exceptional psychic energy, vivid experiences, or fascination with poltergeists and other paranormal phenomena. It’s a phase when music may hold special meaning, or have the potential to change our moods.
Yet both events and people can be elusive or disappointing, and we may not agree with others’ visions and ideals – particularly when it comes to romance, spirituality, and political or legal points of view.
Five very sensitive areas to be aware of include:
• New romances
• Internet dating
• Health care, drugs, and hospitals
• The mind-boggling world of alternative facts and conspiracy theories
• Religious fanaticism
We will need to consciously seek balance, and avoid indulging in reckless actions, paranoid spying, and hot-tempered hissy fits.
The astrology is:

Mars in Gemini trine Jupiter in Libra, 14 degrees

Wednesday, 17th May:
Jupiter in Libra quincunx Neptune in Pisces, at 14 degrees
How do you expand something nebulous? Is the result a huge fog? Or can we find a way to channel some beautiful, uplifting inspiration? Both Libra and Pisces value art, music, love and beauty - both Jupiter and Neptune represent facets of our idealism and spirituality. Somewhere, we will learn to compromise. We’ll see how life can’t be defined by a ‘thumbs up’ or ‘thumbs down’ mentality. There’s always something in between, something elusive. It’s time to honour the twilight and the dawn.
Between May and July 2017, Jupiter and Neptune will be trying to blend airy enthusiasm and intellectual energy with mystical, romantic and ambiguous possibilities. Sometimes it’s so subtle, we barely notice it. There are likely to be whole areas of life that seem to fall asleep, dissolve, or get forgotten. We may not discover what’s going on behind the scenes until November or December when Jupiter and Neptune connect in a more flowing aspect, the trine.
Friday, 19th May:
One of the most helpful ongoing aspects of 2017 joins inventive, innovative ideas with practicality and patience. It’s a winning blend, and what’s created can be of lasting value. Manifesting dreams is never easy, but it’s worth trying harder between now and the end of the year. Successful results await the persistent.
The astrology is:
Saturn in Sagittarius trine Uranus in Aries, exact at 26 degrees, 19th May
Saturn trine Uranus, exact at 25 degrees, 11th November
Thursday, 25th May:
Seeing Double: The new Moon rises at 4 degrees of airy Gemini, the Twins
A Gemini new Moon communicates about more or less anything and everything. There’s much mental energy and some emotion stirred up by news media, talks, negotiations, and short journeys during the whole month ahead.
Mars is in Gemini until 4th June, and Mercury is entering Gemini on 6th June. They join the Sun, which travels through Gemini from 20th May – 21st June. Thoughts and ideas are flying around us.
During the next month, we’ll talk endlessly about choices. But it could be fiendishly difficult to make them.
There’s more in the Moon Diary, as usual.

Thursday 25th May – Wednesday 31st May:
Three steps forward, two steps back
Mars in Gemini likes to say that the pen is mightier than the sword. In other words, action through communication and the spread of ideas is better than a punch-up. Yet the words themselves can be angry, sabre-rattling, or even incendiary.
So when shouty Mars in Gemini comes to oppose sober Saturn in Sagittarius we have a bit of a stand-off. Saturn advises caution, restrictions or limitations. Forward movement is uneven during these days, and pushing too hard can lead to accidents – which are one way of stopping reckless forward motion. These could be very difficult days for military plans, sporting events, and protest movements. Rows can blow up out of nowhere.
The best way to handle this frustrating energy? Be aware of it. Be cautious when driving, and think twice before writing or saying anything nasty, dubious, or confrontational.
It really is a case of more haste, less speed and least said, soonest mended during this tense phase.
Sensitive degrees are found between 24 – 26 of Gemini, Sagittarius, Virgo and Pisces. If you’ve got planets or angles here in your own natal chart, you’ll probably need to count to ten more than once during these days.
